![]() ![]() I would be ready to move there tomorrow and call it our forever home but for one concern, snakes. I loved everything about it, the charm, history, size, friendliness, pace of life on the island. I researched Amelia Island/Fernandina Beach and we took a quick trip and just returned from there. My husband and I have been searching for over a year for the best place for us in Florida. I was a northerner and not used to the kinds of wildlife here in FL, but I'm beyond happy that I didn't let my aversion to snakes stop me from coming here. It's just a matter of being aware, similar to the concept of being aware when the skunk was in your crawl space. It's become just a normal way of life, and behaviors I don't even think about anymore and just do, to keep my garage door closed, not stick my feet into shoes that have been outside without smacking them first, not sticking my hand into unseen places when weeding or planting. Presuming they had to be there, they obviously wanted nothing to do with me and just wanted to go about their business which did not include me. I actually went out into a swampy marshy area on a boardwalk looking for the cotton-mouths that lived there - from a safe place I wanted to see what they looked like in person so that I would be better informed. I actually felt badly for it - it was more petrified of me than me of it, and if I surprised it, it would come to a dead stop hoping I didn't see it, and then would race off away as fast as possible. At one time we had a resident black racer, and although I do not care for snakes one little bit, I learned not to mind him/her at all. I've been living in northeast FL since 2007, in planned neighborhoods not in any rural areas, and I've seen so few snakes. ![]()
