![]() The second game, Shenmue 2, released in Japan and Europe on the Sega Dreamcast in 2001. A western release would follow in early 2000. Now it might have turned out better had the latter happened but how do we know what discussions happened behind the scenes and whether that noose of the kickstarter promises factored into that sort of decision.Nevertheless, Shenmue 3's November 19 release date is approaching, and fans will, at last, be able to get their hands on the final installment in Yu Suzuki's legendary trilogy. The first Shenmue released exclusively on the Sega Dreamcast in Japan back in 1999. Now I agree it would have made a more focused game but it was, IMO, a case of damned if you do, damned if you don't. You can bet it would have been hammered for it in the media and from some fan circles. Had they come out post KS but pre-release and said "sorry we've overshot it on the ambition, we're going to scale back to 1.5 areas (assume the castle was in for arguments sake) rather than 3". Also let me ask you this from a wider media perspective and also your own view. I also agree with some of your points that they clearly overshot the ambition and Shenmue 3 suffered for it in some aspects. Where did I say he was right or that Shenmue 3 was a perfect game exactly? Also just because it wasn't you're idea of a Shenmue sequel it doesn't mean others feel the same way. That's just time and resources spent on yet another way to make money instead of making something smaller and focused.Ĭlick to shrink.See what you're doing is also making assumptions. Its clear he was aiming for maximum nostalgia and fan pandering with Shenmue 3 to the detriment of the games design - we got a forklift mini game when the game ill needed such a thing. yeah you dont need to defend his every move. I hold Yu in high esteem based on his decades in game dev, but. It was flawed from the get go, story needed a rewrite to be more concise and make sense (there's gigantic plot holes throughout) and the entire second half really should have been cut, with the training related stuff and villains moved to the town to:Ī) have the important training stuff take place in Bailu (no need for a second city)ī) have the plot make sense as to why villains are hanging out in a town full of strong martial artists who do nothing to stop them.īut nope, enjoy your forklift and lucky hit. ![]() And instead of cutting down on the pointless stuff (most of the second city) we got the ending cut instead (you know, the one part where this payoff could have worked). They promised too much and didnt have enough time, money or resources to deliver that. You dont need developer insight or whatever to see what happened, its in the final game, its in the kickstarter pitch. We had promises back when the Kickstarter first launched that the game would be big/bigger than Shenmue 2 in terms of city size, and yeah that might be true, but its a barren city which again could have done with being way smaller. ![]() That's just time and resources spent on yet another way to make money instead of making something smaller and focused. ![]() ![]() Click to shrink.I hold Yu in high esteem based on his decades in game dev, but. ![]()
